The golden rule for life here and Life hereafter

ABSTRACT

The index ayah, after commanding to obey Allah and HIS Messenger adds وَاحۡذَرُوۡا meaning beware or be cautious”. What you have to be cautious about? I guess it has several options. Mere lip service to this command is not acceptable. One must mean it and show it in his life on the ground. It is not a single or several commands that you have to accept. Every moment and action of ones life should be a result of this obedience. No ifs or buts allowed. One must look for and dig out the demands and directions of God Almighty and the Messenger at every stage through out ones life.

The long passage in the Quran around the index ayah provides a long list of legislation in different areas of life and emphasises that God alone has the authority to decipher the permissible and the forbidden in all matters, big or small, important or trivial. Anyone who claims this authority to legislate, by word or deed, is actually claiming Godhead, which obviously belongs only to God alone. As a matter of fact this  amounts to challenging God Himself. Any legislation enacted on the basis of social traditions or peoples view in defiance of what God has revealed to His Messenger amounts to a departure from Faith itself.

Thus, this ayah requires reiteration from time to time. The ayah clarifies in very simple terms the issue at hand. It is crystal clear that Allah Ta’aala Subhaanahoo is completely oblivious and entirely unaffected by any human action. But the ayah stresses that even the person of the Holy Prophet is not bothered if folks around him refuse to follow him. His job is to inform, teach and warn of the consequences of denial and refusal. His mission has been already fulfilled. Forgiveness and punishment are the sole prerogative of God. He will forgive and punish accordingly. Yes, the negative attitude of the Quraish did trouble the holy Prophet a lot and actually hurt him because he was a very kind and sensitive person and felt sorry at the fate of the disbelievers. But he had the satisfaction of conveying and completing his mission. Thats what matters. After all to obey Allah and HIS Messenger is in ones own interest.

To obey God and obey the Messenger” is a very common combination of commands in the Quran. In the present context, point out Nasr Sayyed Husein et al in their modern tafseer The Study Quran” that it is likely meant to encourage obedience specifically to the prohibitions listed the preceding two verses.

This ayah is one of several places where the Prophet is reminded that his only duty is to clearly declare and announce his mission. He is once again reminded that he cannot judge or predict the response of the people to his communications. As a corollary therefore, he is not responsible for the action of those who ditch and reject his proclamation.

As I have stated earlier, this ayah does not need an elaborate explanation. It is self explanatory.

PRELUDE

From the Pen and Perspective of a self-styled PPK Muslim (Proud, Practicing, Knowledgeable) with a humble submission that Islam totally rejects Blind Following BUT vigorously focusses on the Limitations of Pure Human Reasoning…………..and clearly and comprehensively ALLAH knows best.

In the beginning of the seventh century C.E., the folks of Mecca and Medina had a fascinatingly unique window: they had direct access to the Heavens through one of their own. They were blessed with a regular stream of Divine counseling and guidelines. Question and answer sessions were part of the program. Even individual questioner was graced by an answer. In the short Introduction to this scheme they were assured that at the end of this twenty-two year project, Divine Directions and Admonitions will continue through the agency of the PEN. The whole discourse has been preserved and archived till eternity under the guarantee of our Lord and Creator. This record in known as the Quran.

It should sound unbelievable but factually appears to be true: Many of our prevalent, widespreadand important concepts and opinions about religious matters do not have a basis in the Quran and sometimes even appear to be in obvious conflict with the teachings of the Quran. It would bevery educative and helpful to discuss an Ayah once a month to see if it supports or rejects ourviews and actions in our daily life. I wish and hope this generates a fruitful interactive discussion.

DUAA
بِسمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحمٰنِ الرَّحيمِ

In the name of Allah, we praise HIM, seek HIS help and ask for HIS forgiveness. Whosoever Allah guideth none can misguide; whosoever HE allows to fall astray, none can guide him right. We bear witness that there is none worthy of worship but Allah alone and we bear witness that Mohammed, SAW is HIS slave-servant and the Seal of HIS Messengers.

Further, we recall that Allah Ta’aala has declared in HIS Book[1]
“He granteth wisdom to whom He pleaseth; and he to whom wisdom is granted receiveth indeed a benefit overflowing; but none will grasp the Message (or remember or receive admonition) but men of understanding (or intellect)”
and we also recollect that he has warned us about the day of judgement[2]
“Then on that day you shall most certainly be questioned about the boons (joy, pleasure).”
We realise, that there cannot be a greater boon or blessing or benefit than wisdom and we wonder if this should be a timely reminder to very many of us sincere and practicing Muslims who use our critical thinking to enhance the mundane for ourselves and our families but in matters religion we choose to

resort to blind following — taqleed, doctrine of classical Sunni Islamic Fiqh.

(NOTE:  I have filtered out the proofs and details into the Footnotes for those who have the time and interest for them. The main text will then be of reasonable length, hopefully for the busy majority. What follows is not a sermon; I do not feel qualified to give one, anyhow. I wish, it may provide a food for thought. A caveat seems in order: If the ayah selected pertains to issues we face in our daily life with our family, friends, neighbours or peers it may affect us personally and lead to some self analysis and soul searching which in turn could be divisive and distressing. If taken in the right spirit, it can be a humble attempt towards finding the “straight path”.)

THE AYAH

Surah Al-Maeda No. 5  Ayah 92
“And obey Allah and obey the Messenger and beware. And if you turn away – then know that upon Our Messenger is only [the responsibility for] clear notification.”

A SHORT VERSION

“I am convinced about the veracity of my opinions, but I do consider it likely that they may turn out to be incorrct. Likewise, I am convinced about the incorrectness of the views different from mine, but I do concede the possibility that they may turn out to be correct.” — Imam Shafa’i

THE MAIN STORY

“I am convinced about the veracity of my opinions, but I do consider it likely that they may turn out to be incorrect. Likewise, I am convinced about the incorrectness of the views different from mine, but I do concede the possibility that they may turn out to be correct.” — Imam Shafa’i

A simple straight forward ayah not needing any level of explanation yet depicting some basic and fundamental demands of Islam.

The index ayah, after commanding to obey Allah and HIS Messenger adds وَاحۡذَرُوۡا meaning “beware or be cautious”. What you have to be cautious about? I guess it has several options. Mere lip service to this command is not acceptable. One must mean it and show it in his life on the ground. It is not a single or several commands that you have to accept. Every moment and action of one’s life should be a result of this obedience. No if’s or but’s allowed. One must look for and dig out the demands and directions of God Almighty and the Messenger at every stage through out one’s life.

That’s what matters. After all to obey Allah and HIS Messenger is in one’s own interest.

“To obey God and obey the Messenger” is a very common combination of commands in the Quran (see 3:32, 132; 4:59; 8:1, 20, 46; 24:54; 33:33; 47:33; 58:13; 64:12; see also 7:156–57; 59:7). In the present context, point out Nasr Sayyed Husein et al in their modern tafseer “The Study Quran” that “it is likely meant to encourage obedience specifically to the prohibitions listed in vv 90–91” ie the preceding two verses which are:

يٰۤاَيُّهَا الَّذِيۡنَ اٰمَنُوۡۤا اِنَّمَا الۡخَمۡرُ وَالۡمَيۡسِرُ وَالۡاَنۡصَابُ وَالۡاَزۡلَامُ رِجۡسٌ مِّنۡ عَمَلِ الشَّيۡطٰنِ فَاجۡتَنِبُوۡهُ لَعَلَّكُمۡ تُفۡلِحُوۡنَ

“Believers! Intoxicants, games of chance, idolatrous sacrifices at altars, and divining arrows108 are all abominations, the handiwork of Satan. So turn wholly away from it that you may attain to true success.”

“By intoxicants and games of chance Satan only desires to create enmity and hatred between you, and to turn you away from the remembrance of Allah and from Prayer. Will you, then, desist?”
